With the advent of spring we are looking forward to the first harvest of leaf salads. They often win an imaginary competition for the earliest vegetables that the garden will offer us. But keeping his leaves fresh and crunchy for more than the first few hours after his tips, but seems like an impossible task. Unless we…

Whether it is a salad from the garden, or the one we brought from the store, we know that it will soon start to fade in front of our eyes. The leaves loss of tension, wilted, no one will want to prepare a healthy delicacy. Fortunately, there is one very easy trick with which you will achieve almost miraculous extension of the freshness of the salad.

Bag and paper cloth

You will only need a plastic bag or other plastic container and paper towel to keep the leaf salad correctly. Once you bring home a salad that you know will not be consumed the same day, take care of it with the greatest care. It really pays off, because you do not throw away money unnecessarily, or you will not lose the result of your gardening effort.

Wash the salad well

It will be good to separate the lettuce leaves and it is important to wash them to get rid of both impurities and any residues after chemical treatment. It goes well with cold water, preferably flowing. But who wants to save more water can also wash the salad in a bowl. However, it is recommended to replace the water at least once.

Dry and save

Once the salad is clean, dry it. If you have a centrifugal, it will be a big bonus, but if not, the fine cloth will be enough to place the leaves, cover and gently dry. Then comes the storage for a temporary rest in the refrigerator. Place a paper cloth on the bottom of the container and spread the salad on it. Always proceed in layers, alternating paper towels and salad itself. The point is that cloths absorb moisture that could otherwise cause problems on the leaves.

Let the air flow

Then close the bag or container, but it will be good if it can gently circulate the air. So do not allow them completely, leave a slight gap. This will also facilitate the evaporation of excess water. If you need to keep the salad longer, replace paper cloths regularly. You will see that this method will be successful.

For other vegetables

The same procedure for the longest storage in good condition also applies to other leafy vegetables such as spinach, arugula, or cabbage. We also find a high water content, so we will proceed as described in the previous paragraphs. But what about other vegetables? Do you know that tomatoes do not belong to the fridge? The cold will relieve them of the right consistency. The room temperature will be much better for them.

Exhale the cucumbers, let the onion ventilate

Cucumbers, on the other hand, will be better in a cold environment, but we have to remove them from the plastic packaging, if they have it, or do not leave them in the bag. It lasts much better either in an open container or wrapped in paper. Perhaps most of us keep the potatoes correctly – preferably in a colder environment in a darker place, but certainly not in the fridge, where the harm of the starches that are contained in them would run out. Onions and garlic will need dry and well ventilated spaces, we must definitely avoid their storage in plastic bags or containers. How do you keep the basic vegetables? Are you clear about it, or do you ever fumble?
