According to the US President, new rates represent a more ‘generous’ treatment than the US has received from their business partners
The president said on Sunday (30) that the rates he intends to impose in the coming days will affect “all countries” and not just those with the highest commercial imbalances with . Trump announced that on April 2 he will start applying a series of tariffs on a date he calls “Liberation Day.”
“It would start with all countries, so let’s see what happens,” Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One. When asked which one would be affected, he said he didn’t know if they will be “15 countries, 10 or 15” and said “there’s no limit.”
Prior to the statements, many analysts expected the new 15% rate of tariffs to be directed to countries with the most commercial imbalances with the United States, a group that Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent called “the 15 dirty.”
According to Trump, tariffs represent a more “generous” treatment than the United States received from their business partners. “They stole us as no country has ever been stolen in history and we will be much more kind than they were with us. But it’s substantial money for the country anyway,” he said.
The president of the United States has already imposed tariffs on steel and aluminum imports and additional rates on China imports. On April 3, the rates on imported cars will take effect. According to Peter Navarro, Trump’s main commercial advisor, car tariffs could raise $ 100 billion a year.
