An act at PUC-SP on the night of Monday (31) gathered names from the left in remembrance to the 1964 coup and protest against the chance of forgiveness to those involved in the attacks of January 8, 2023.
The former minister () was one of those present and said that it is important to promote events of the type because “it is not possible that again an attempt will go unpunished in Brazil”, in reference to January 8.
Also participating were federal deputy José Genoino (PT-SP), federal deputies Orlando Silva (PC do B) and Ivan Valente (-SP) and Councilwoman Luna Zaratini (PT). The singer Chico César also attended.
The event was organized by the prerogative lawyers group – which is aligned with the Lula administration and has at least five members in public office in management.
For the second year in a row, it will not perform official acts in memory of the 1964 military coup.
Last year, on the 60th anniversary of democratic rupture, the president guided the ministries to avoid both criticism and ceremonies on the subject, in an attempt not to intensify the relationship with the military.
Government members showed a certain discomfort with the act, according to interlocutors. the Sheeta member of the National Secretariat of the PT, who declined to be identified, said that the discussion about amnesty should not be addressed at the event, as it could increase tension in the country.
Prerogatives coordinator Marco Aurélio de Carvalho, however, argued that the issue is essential, arguing that the acts of 8 January represented an “indisputable and violent” attempt to abolish the Democratic Rule of Law.
“Precisely because we live 21 years under a very tough authoritarian regime, we need to say ‘never again’. We can’t trivialize any coup attempt so that it does not occur again in the country,” said Marco Aurélio.
Dirceu told journalists during the event that symbolic acts recalling the beginning of the dictatorship are the responsibility of civil society and that the “most important” is that there was no celebration in.
“Before it was celebrated in barracks, now it is no longer celebrated. The government has made in relation to memories, archives, dead and missing.”
Genoino stated that “it is not a matter of looking back,” but of knowing that, without change, there will be other attempts to blow.
