Initiative seeks to transform restoration into profitable activity, with an investment of R $ 450 million
BNDES (National Bank for Economic and Social Development) and Petrobras announced on Monday (31.mar.2025) a partnership for the restoration of degraded areas in the Amazon. The project, called Profession+, aims to recover up to 50,000 hectares of forest.
The goal is to capture about 15 million tons of carbon, equivalent to annual emissions of 8.94 million gasoline cars. O is the 1st Restoration Carbon Credit Purchase Program in collaboration with a financier, BNDES.
The first phase of the program includes hiring up to 5 million carbon credits, covering an area of approximately 15 thousand hectares. The initial effort should mobilize more than R $ 450 million in restoration investments and create about 4,500 jobs. The initiative also involves a market consultation for contributions in the draft 1st notice and carbon purchase contract.
Professor+ will select ecological restoration projects with native species. Through reforestation, projects will generate carbon credits, which will be purchased by Petrobras in long -term contracts. BNDES will offer funding to the developers of these projects through special credit lines, such as the Climate Fund.
“It is expected that the establishment of a standard carbon purchase contract for restoration projects with high integrity and strict technical and socio -environmental criteria will be a reference to foster the development of the restoration market and carbon credits.”said Maurício Tolmasquim, director of energy transition and sustainability of Petrobras.
