Documents of the dictatorship period are found in the IML of RJ – 01/04/2025 – Power

The Federal, in partnership with public agencies and civil society groups, located last Thursday (27) historical documents in what they can help in the location of missing politicians during (1964-1985).

The papers were stored in the former headquarters of IML (Medical-Legal Institute), in Lapa, in the central region of the state capital. During the inspection, records dated from the 1930s and 1960s were identified, as well as materials from the dictatorship period.

“The old IML has been used as a mover file. There is a collection of various bodies of ICCE (Carlos Éboli Institute), the proportium IML, police functional files, among other sectors,” said Felipe Nin of the Memory, Truth, Justice and Reparation collective.

Nin compared the potential of the collection to another research developed by the torture group never again in the IML itself in the 1990s that allowed the location of the bodies of 14 missing political. They were in a common ditch in Ricardo de Albuquerque (RJ) cemetery, a place that became a memorial

“At the time, records of deaths and cadaverous reports were searched from the report of family members who knew the dates of the disappearance and prison. What we found is much more than it was researched at the time,” said Nin.

Prosecutor Júlio Araújo stated that the collection should be preserved for the reconstitution of the country’s historical memory and elucidating human rights violations.

“The presence of documents of historical interest was found. From now on, it will be essential to discuss and build the collection of these documents and their destination to the public archive of the State of Rio de Janeiro,” he said.

A member of the torture group never again, Rafael Maui said the location of the documents “is a true opening of files of repression, something we have been fighting for a long time.”

“This process not only allows access to these documents, but also contributes to the elucidation of the facts and the guarantee of the memory of the country,” he said.
