The Government, a document that complements the physical card, which remains the mandatory, and that will enter into force tomorrow Wednesday after the publication in the BOE of the Royal Decree that regulates it. From then on the card can be carried on the mobile thanks to a computer application or app endorsed by the National Police and will allow selecting the data shown based on the use you want to give. For example, to prove the age of majority at the entrance to a disco, the user can only show his photograph, his name and age, while for other cases, he can display other fields. Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska, explained after the Council of Ministers that can be used for almost all face-to-face activities that are made with the physical card, except to cross borders or identify abroad. Below are some of the keys to this new document, the procedures to install it or when it will be fully operational.

What will it be for? Among the uses of the Digital ID is to prove the identity and personal data before public agents or officials or for face -to -face procedures, whether legal or administrative, before any public administration or private entity. Some examples are to prove the age of majority, the opening of a bank account, the rental of a vehicle, the registration in a hotel, exercise the right to vote, sign a contract of sale of a house or deeds before the notary or request a loan. The Interior Ministry works in an agreement with AENA, the public company that manages the airports of Spain, so that it can also be used as identification on national flights.

Why can’t it be used? It cannot be used to cross borders or to identify outside the national territory, although in the consulates that Spain has. During 2025 it can not be used to carry out procedures on the Internet that are already carried out with electronic certificates, although it is planned that within a year it will be possible.

Do I have full right to identify with the digital ID from tomorrow? No. The Interior Ministry has set a period of 12 months for public and private entities to adapt to the new system. In this period it will not be mandatory to accept the digital format, but after this time it will be a right. Within its progressive implementation, the police will have 6,000 smartphones to verify the identity in a digital way that the citizen security agents will use and contacts with 24 organizations have been established to begin to disseminate their employment.

What do I have to do to process it? The first thing to do is register so that the mobile phone number in which the MIDNI application will be discharged is linked to the identity of the citizen. To comply with this step, the ID must be in force and active electronic certificates. It can be done through the web, in any of the documentation update (PAD) positions, which are at police stations or municipalities and that are machines similar to the ATMs, with keyboard and screen, which allow to renew the keys to use the DNI chip, or at the time of renewing the ID, when the agent will offer him that possibility. Once the user is registered, the application can be downloaded, and it is completed with the activation, in which it will be necessary to introduce the ID number and the support number, which is reflected in the card.

Where and when can I find the midni application? Should we pay? This app It can be found from 8.00 on Wednesday on Google and Apple application platforms. Sources from the Interior Ministry underline that it is the only official application with legal support in an equivalent to physical ID and insist that it is completely free. You can download both people who are going to use the digital ID and those who need to read these codes. The applications are validated by the National Cryptological Center and the Spanish Agency for Data Protection. The National Police will begin in tomorrow a campaign so that the official application with others is not confused apps, as well as the dissemination of videos through social networks to explain its operation.

How will it work? The owner of the DNI can decide what data he wants to show based on the use he is going to give him, since it is not necessary to show them all in all situations. The three options are to show photography, name and age; A simple version, in which photography, name, surname, sex and the validity of the ID appears, and the option of the complete DNI. Once you decide to share it, a QR code is generated that the person who wants to identify will read with another device, which can be a mobile that also has Midni installed, or a scanning gun or other adapted reader. As if it were the menu of a restaurant, it will go from seeing the code, to the data that have been decided to share. That information, generated by the National Police at the same time, ensures that the data is authentic and will only be visible 60 seconds. In case the physical ID is lost or stolen, that information is not available.

From now on, will all the IDs be digital? No, the digital ID is completely voluntary. It is used as a copy, or a reflection of the physical card, which remains the mandatory, and can be used to avoid loss or losses of the original document. If the physical ID expires, so does the digital, and the renewal of a physical ID involves a new activation of the digital DNI.

Will there be digital denies? The Interior Ministry is studying the identity documents received by foreign persons, known as NIE, in the digital ID, but its use is not included, for the moment, according to sources from that department.
