More than 4 million Argentines leave poverty situation

Survey shows that 38.1% of the current population is poor, a drop of 14.8 percentage points compared to September 2024

O (Argentine National Institute of Statistics and Census) released on Monday (31.mar.2025) a survey indicating that the percentage of people in poverty fell to 38.1%. A research September 2024, pointed out that this number was 52.9%.

The study showed that the highest poverty incidences were recorded in the North (47%) and Northwest (42.8%) in the country, while the lowest rates were observed in the Patagonia (33.5%) and Pampean (35%) regions.

Regarding the 1st semester of 2024, the incidence of poverty registered a drop in both households and the population of 13.9 and 14.8 percentage points (PP), respectively. In the case of indigence, there was a reduction of 7.2 pp in households and 9.9 pp in the population”, Pointed out the survey on the comparison with data from the 1st semester of 2024.

The survey considers that a person is in poverty based on a family income calculation and access to basic needs, such as food, transportation and clothing, as well as essential services such as health and education.

Lower rate since 2021

The poverty rate in the neighboring country ranges from 30% to 40% of the population since 2017. By 2024, it exceeded the historical mark of more than half of the poverty population, but recorded more than 14 percentage points in 6 months. The lowest previous rate was in the 1st semester of 2022, when 36.5% of the population was in poverty.

Government celebrates result

This is the first time the poverty rate decreases in Argentina since the inauguration of President Javier Milei (La Libertad Avanza, right), in December 2023. In a statement published in the presidential account, Milei management attributed the result to “deep economic reforms promoted by President Javier MileiAnd that the previous index of 52.9% was a “unprecedented poverty left by the governments of Alberto Fernández, Cristina Kirchner and Sergio Massa”.
