and a few minutes later a 6.7 -degree earthquake followed. During the weekend, a series of powerful aftershocks was recorded along the Shangulation Rift, around which a large part of the country’s population lives.
The earthquake, unprecedented for decades in Myanmar, has caused scenes of chaos of up to 1,000 kilometers from the focus, such as in Bangkok, the capital of Thailand, where at least 19 people have lost their lives, especially when collapsing a 30 -storey -height.
Battle with time, heat and sepsis
In Mandalei, the second largest city in Myanmar, which is close to the focus, rescue teams were currently working at a less intense pace compared to yesterday. The heat, with mercury reaching 40 degrees Celsius at noon, burden rescuers who attempt around the damaged buildings and accelerating the decomposition of corpses trapped under the ruins, complicating their identification.
As Mandalei’s 1,000 General Hospital was evacuated, hundreds of patients take care of outdoor areas. “It’s a very, very incomplete situation for the whole world,” said one member of the medical team. “We’re doing the best.”
The funerals of hundreds of victims are expected to take place today, as the mournful Muslim community is celebrating Eid, the celebration that marks the end of the month of Ramadan.
“Under normal circumstances, we would be very happy as it is Eid,” said Win Tiri Aung, a 26 -year -old faithful from Mandalei. “But our hearts are heavy this year.”
The Myanmar authorities today spoke of 2,056 dead, 3,900 injured and 270 missing.
