(Reuters)-White House advisors are proposing about 20% tariffs on most imports in the United States, the Washington Post said on Tuesday, while markets and consumers await the details of US President Donald Trump’s reciprocal tariff plan.
Trump, who promised to reveal his plan on Wednesday, said on Sunday that reciprocal tariffs will target all countries. The White House said on Monday that any country that has treated Americans unfairly should expect to receive a tariff.
White House advisors claim that no final decision has been made and that several options are being discussed, according to the post. Trump’s government is also evaluating the possibility of using the expected trillions of dollars in new import revenues for a dividend or tax refund, the report said, citing three unidentified people familiar with the subject.
Representatives of the White House did not immediately respond to a request for commentary on the reported proposal.
Global investors are eagerly awaiting the details of Trump’s tariffs. The Republican President has already imposed aluminum, steel and automobile rates, as well as increasing rates on all China products.
