Secretary of Education says that the university has failed to protect students from acts it considered as anti -Semites
The government of US President Donald Trump (Republican Party) announced on Monday (31.mar.2025) that he will make a “comprehensive review ” of federal scholarships and contracts granted to Harvard University to repress anti -Semitism in university campuses.
A federal task force to combat anti-Semitism is reviewing more than $ 255 million in contracts between Harvard and the Federal Government to ensure that the school is following civil rights laws, says the Trump management announcement. The government will also examine $ 8.7 billion in Harvard subsidies and affiliate subsidies.
“Harvard has served as a symbol of the American dream for generations – the maximum aspiration for students around the world to work hard and gain admission to the historical institution”said the Secretary of Education, Linda McMahon.
“Harvard failure to protect students on the anti -Semitic discrimination campus, all while promoting divisive ideologies instead of free investigation, put their reputation at serious risk. Harvard can correct these mistakes and restore as a campus dedicated to academic excellence and the search for truth, where all students feel safe on their campus”completed the secretary.
The same task force cut $ 400 million from and threatened to cut billions more if she refused a list of demands from President Donald Trump’s administration.
“The task force will continue its efforts to eradicate anti-Semitism and reorient our higher education institutions in the essential values that support a liberal education,” Said HHS interim advisor and member of the task force, Sean Keveney. “We are pleased that Harvard is willing to get involved with us in these goals.”
The announcement of the government also says that any institution that violates federal compliance standards can face administrative actions, including termination of contract. In a letter, Harvard University’s director Alan Garber said the institution has made “considerable efforts” in the last 15 months to deal with anti -Semitism.
“We still have a lot of work to do. Let’s get involved with the members of the Federal Government’s task force to combat anti-Semitism to ensure that they have a full report of the work we did and the actions we will take from now on to combat anti-Semitism. We decided to take the measures that will take Harvard and their vital mission below, while we protect our community and their academic freedom. intolerance while we create the conditions that promote excellence in teaching and research that is at the heart of our mission ”, says an excerpt from the letter.
