A proposal in the US Congress, presented by Democratic and Republican senators, provides for 500% rates to products from countries that buy oil, gas and uranium to Russia until Moscow negotiates a ceasefire with Ukraine.
Bipartisan legislative initiative came from Democrat Richard Blumenthal and Republican Lindsey Graham, with a view to “introducing primary and secondary sanctions against Russia and actors who support Russia’s aggression in Ukraine.”
According to Blumenthal, in an announcement released on Tuesday on its Senate ‘online’ page, the bill has the support of 50 other republican and Democrats of the High Chamber of Congress and foresees “a 500% rate on imported goods from countries that buy oil, gas, uranium and other Russian products.”
Complementary legislation, he indicates, is being presented in the House of Representatives (Baixa Chamber) by Republican congressmen Brian Fitzpatrick and Joe Wilson and Democrats Mike Quigley and Marcy Kaptur.
The sanctions against Moscow, the legislators say, “would be imposed if Russia refused to participate in good faith negotiations for a lasting peace with Ukraine,” and follow the line already admitted by US President Donald Trump of “imposing secondary tariffs on all the oil that leaves Russia.”
