In recent years, the second -hand product market has been growing, with many brands adhering to this concept. Ikea has decided to follow this trend and launched Ikea Preowned, an online platform for the purchase and sale of brand used furniture. Now this concept has come to Portugal. Learn more in this article.

Start of the initiative

The first tests of this initiative began in August in Madrid (Spain) and Oslo (Norway), with an experimental period until December. The success of the experience has led the company to quickly expand the concept to other countries.

In Portugal, the arrival of Ikea Preowned was initially scheduled for August. However, the platform is now available through the brand’s official website, allowing any customer to sell and buy used Ikea articles.

How to Sell

To sell a furniture, just post an ad to the platform, including photos and the intended price. The system uses artificial intelligence to add promotional images and detailed information, such as the measures of the article.

A strategic step for Ikea

The creation of this marketplace represents a strategic step for Ikea, which thus enters the used products market, competing with other established platforms. Jesper Brodin, executive director of Ingka, a company responsible for Ikea stores, said this idea was being developed for some time.

Payment options

Buyers can collect articles directly with the sellers. As a way of incentive, salespeople have two payment options: receive cash value or opt for an IKEA purchasing voucher, which includes a 15% bonus on the sale value, as it refers to.

Currently, the use of the platform is free, but there is a possibility that a symbolic committee on transactions as indicated by the company is in the future.

Innovative solutions

Ikea is increasingly betting on digital and sustainability, seeking to offer innovative solutions to customers. The new platform is part of this strategy, promoting product reuse and reducing waste.

In Portugal, Ikea has five physical stores: Alfragide, Loures, Matosinhos, Braga and Loulé. In addition, it has been expanding its presence through planning studios, which allow customers to obtain personalized counseling in the creation of environments for their homes.

Balance Campaign

In addition to the launch of Ikea Preowned, the brand is currently conducting a balance campaign. Discounts can go to 50% and are valid until April 13. However, these promotions are limited to physical stores and existing stock. With this new bet, Ikea reinforces its commitment to the circular economy, offering customers an affordable and sustainable way to acquire furniture and decoration.

An initiative that allows saving

The initiative can be particularly useful for those who want to renew the house without spending much or those who want to give a new life to the furniture they no longer need.

The project follows a growing trend in the retail sector, where more and more consumers look for economic and ecological alternatives. It now remains to follow the adhesion of Portuguese consumers to this new functionality and realize how this initiative could evolve in the coming years.
