The Israel government has decided on Tuesday to eliminate all tariffs imposed to date on products from the United States, “the largest commercial partner” of the country at a time when Donald Trump’s tariff policies have unleashed criticisms at international level and some countries already speak of “commercial war”. This measure has been adopted in order not only of the Israeli prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, but also by the Minister of Finance, the ultra -nationalist Bezalel Smotrich, and the Minister of Economy and Industry, Nir Barkat, as announced by the Executive himself in an official statement. “The United States is the closest ally of Israel and also its most important commercial partner. In 2024, exports from goods to the United States were 17.3 billion dollars and services exports were estimated at 16.7 billion dollars,” adds the aforementioned letter. The commercial agreement between the United States and Israel of 1985 already stipulates that the vast majority of imported American products, around 99%, are free of tariffs, so that this elimination of rates will affect “a very limited number of products.”
