Portuguese researchers want to create the first products with a cell cells, but the end result “is not exactly the same as the octopus we removed from the sea.” The product is recreated in reactors such as beer.
Grow meat for consumption without the animal. The idea may seem strange, but there are many companies betting on products that are neither plant based nor implying killing animals. Portuguese researchers want to create the first products with octopus cells and the went to see how.
It is an ongoing investigation. It is not even necessary to kill the animal. These laboratory cells will grow without the octopus and turn one day into food for humans.
Why the octopus? It is an animal that is threatened, is not produced in Aquaculture and is very important for Portuguese culture because we eat a lot of octopus.
It won’t be exactly an octopus like the octopus we removed from the sea.
“Technology has some similarities with yoghurt or beer production. Therefore, they are great fermenting. And in the way we produce millions of liters of beer, we will theoretically produce millions of pounds of octopus or any kind of fish,” says Cell4Food CEO.
