President of Argentina, Javier Milei, speaks during a ceremony to commemorate the 43rd anniversary of the war between Argentina and the United Kingdom by the Falkland Islands (called Las Malvinas by Argentina) in the ‘Cenotáfio to the dead of the Falkland War’ in Buenos Aires Aires

The Argentine President, said on Wednesday (2), to want a “power” so that the inhabitants of the Falkland Islands “prefer to be Argentines” in a commemorative discourse of the War against the United Kingdom for sovereignty of the territory. On Wednesday, during an act in Buenos Aires, President Milei assured that he is looking for Argentina to be a power for the Malvinenses to be Argentines and that they do not even need to be determined or convinced to achieve it. ” According to UN Argentine Chancellery and UN Resolutions, the principle of self -determination of peoples is not applicable in the case of Falklands. Specificity consists in the fact that the United Kingdom “occupied the islands forcibly in 1833, expelled its original population and did not allow its return, violating the Argentine territorial integrity.”

Almost 200 years ago Argentina claimed this archipelago, located 600 km of its coast in the South Atlantic, the scenario of a war conflict between April 2 and June 14, 1982, which ended with the UK victory and a 649 Argentines and 255 British dead. The United Kingdom repudiates any Argentine claim and considers that the 3,600 inhabitants of the Falklands Islands must be entitled to self -determination. Surrounded by executive officials, army staff and a handful of veterans of that conflict, Milei assured that his government aims to “that Malvinenses decide to vote with their feet someday.” This expression implies the possibility that citizens have to manifest their choices and move to the territory where policies come closer to their preferences.

Milei accused the governments that preceded him to harm the Argentine claim of sovereignty with “the economic and diplomatic decisions of the political caste,” as he refers to most opponents. “No one can seriously take a nation’s claim, whose leadership is known in the world for its corruption and incompetence,” he said. In the past, Milei generated controversy for declaring himself an admirer of former minister Margaret Thatcher, ahead of the British government at the time of the war with Argentina.
