The plenary of Senate It approved, on Tuesday (1st), the bill that seeks to protect Brazilian trade in international negotiations, called economic reciprocity (PL 2088/2023). In a rare climate of union between government and opposition, the text was unanimously chanceled with 70 votes.

The text first passed by the Commission on Economic Affairs (CAE) on a terminative basis and would directly follow the consideration of the House of Representatives. However, at the request of the Government leader in Congress, Senator Randolfe Rodrigues (PT-AP), the bill was taken to the vote in the plenary of Casa Alta.

The government leader in the house, Jaques Wagner (PT-BA), celebrated the fact.

“There are themes that concern the national economy, the defense of the national economy, or other topics that the national interest speaks louder. And this text of the so -called reciprocity offers the federal government tools that I hope they do not need to be used. But if an attack on national products is realized, of course we do not want to fight but will not be subservient,” said the senator in the plenary.

The article, which had the rapporteur of Senator Tereza Cristina (PP-MS), is a response to the tariff of US President Donald Trump and the possible restrictions imposed by the European Union to Brazilian meat and soybean production in deforested areas.
