Russia takes village control in eastern Ukraine; Kiev says fighting continues

The Russian Ministry of Defense said on Tuesday that its forces took control of the village of Rozlyv, in the Donetsk region of Ukraine, a focal point of its constant advancement towards the West.

The Ukrainian military said the Russian forces launched five attacks against Rozlyv and the neighboring village of Kostynopil, but did not recognize that Rozlyv was now in the hands of Moscow.

A report from the Ukrainian state state reported that three battles were still occurring in the area.

Reuters could not independently verify the reports of the battlefield on either side.

Deepstate, a Ukrainian blog that monitors the 1,000 km front line using open sources, reported Russian advances in the last 24 hours near Rozlyv.

Also reported were intense combat to the east, near Toretsk, another strongly disputed city.

Rozlyv is south of Pokrovsk, a city aimed at Russian forces for many weeks and place of the only Ukraine mine that produces coke coal. The mine closed when the Russian troops approached the place.

After failing their initial advance on the capital Kiev in the first weeks after the large -scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Russian forces concentrated efforts to control the Oriental regions of Donetsk and Luhansk.

Both regions, partially controlled by Russian troops, were attached by Russia in 2022, in an action reported by Ukraine and its Western partners.

In the Zaporizehzia region of Ukraine, the south, regional governor Ivan Fedorov said that Russian bombings killed a person in a front line settlement that he did not identify. Authorities in the adjacent region of DniproProperovsk said Russian bombings injured three people in the city of Nikopol, a frequent Russian target.

In the Russian town of Taganrog, east of the Ukrainian border, the acting governor of the Rostov region, Yuri Slyusus, said Ukrainian drones damaged two high buildings. He said 85 residents were evacuated from one of the buildings.
