In 2024, Brazilian consumers faced, on average, 10 hours and 14 minutes without electricity, according to data released by (Aneel). Despite the significant time of interruption, Aneel highlighted an improvement over the previous year. In 2023, the average time without power supply was slightly higher, and the number of interruptions fell from 5.15 to 4.89 by 2024, representing a reduction of about 5%.
The compensatory amounts paid by the electricity concessionaires also registered an increase, from R $ 1.080 billion by 2023 to R $ 1.22 billion in 2024. The number of units that received compensation rose from 22.3 million to 27.3 million. Aneel explained that these payments are based on the global performance of continuity of distributors. Among the concessionaires, CPFL Santa Cruz, in São Paulo, stood out with the best performance in 2024, followed by the EPB of Paraíba and Ero de Rondônia. In contrast, Enel do Rio de Janeiro, Enel do Ceará and RGE of Rio Grande do Sul had the worst rates, highlighting the need for improvements in these regions.
Aneel considers the performance ranking an effective mechanism to encourage improvements in electricity distributors. This ranking not only promotes competitiveness among companies, but also ensures that consumers receive a better quality service. In addition to infrastructure issues, climatic factors such as heavy rainfall also impacted energy supply. In Sao Paulo, for example, the capital faced heavy rainfall, which, combined with the fall of trees on electric networks, contributed to the interruptions in the supply.
