Losing the Finance Portal password is more common than you think, especially when the IRS delivery period is approaching. If this has happened to you, the most important thing is to keep calm – and know that there are quick solutions.
With the deadline for submitting the IRS declaration to take place between April 1 and June 30, many taxpayers face the same problem: they cannot enter the finance portal because they have forgotten the password.
The Tax and Customs Authority (AT) provides various recovery methods, provided that the contacts are properly stained.
How to recover the password step by step
At the Finance Portal (www.portaldasfinancas.gov.pt), you should click on “Start Session” and then select “Recover Password”.
The next page will ask for the tax identification number and the answer to the secret question chosen in the initial record.
If you have the mobile phone in finance, you can choose to:
- Receive a code by SMSwhich allows you to immediately define a new password;
- Or choose the option “Carta”which nullifies the current password and sends a new one to the tax address within an average period of five business days.
Immediate recovery by SMS (with stained mobile phone)
When choosing the SMS method, you should enter the registered and stained phone number with the OT.
The system sends a six -digit code, valid for five minutes, which you must enter to complete the password change.
This functionality allows you to recover access within minutes as long as data is updated.

If you have not previously registered the number of mobile phone or email, you will have to select the recovery option by letter.
In this case, do not get rid of completing the secret question and wait up to five business days to receive the new password at the tax address.
What if you don’t remember the question and security answer?
In this scenario, the only alternative is to send an email to [email protected]with the subject “NIF password cancellation”. In the body of the message, you should indicate:
- Full name;
- NIF;
- Fiscal abode
After analysis, the OT will send a password cancellation confirmation email.
Only then can you register and receive a new password, also by letter.
Fiasting contacts avoid future delays
The Tax Authority recommends that taxpayers keep their contact data updated (mobile phone and email) on the Finance Portal.
This simple step allows quick recoveries and safe communications with services.
