“Why not?” Asks Washington Quaquá, about using the background of the municipality with $ 2 billion to purchase the SAF
The mayor of Maricá, Washington Quaquá (PT), said he had plans to invest in Brazilian football, using the city’s sovereign fund, valued at $ 2 billion. The information was released by the newspaper on Wednesday (2.br.2025).
The objective is to acquire Vasco da Gama’s SAF (corporation of football) and build a stadium in Maricá with a capacity of 36,000 people.
Quaquá is a fan of Vasco and seeks to establish a dialogue with the president of the club, Pedrinho, former player and known figure in the football. For this, it has the help of Bismarck, another former Vasco athlete, to facilitate negotiations.
“I want to take a proposal to the SAF Purchase of Vasco’s SAF”, The mayor stated, clarifying that the purchase initiative would be an action of the city’s investment fund and not a personal acquisition. “I will not be me, but the city’s investment fund. Why not?” said Quaquá.
Maricá Sovereign Fund, fueled by petroleum royalties, has been a significant source of resources for the municipality. In Quaquá’s words, the background is “hitting the $ 2 billion house“.
The city already has a club: Maricá Futebol Clube, which made its debut in the 1st Division of the State Championship in 2025. Quaquá believes that, over time, Maricá could become a kind of “2nd Club”For the Rio de Janeiro fans, filling the stadium in their matches.
