The Minister of Education, Camilo Santana (PT), determined on Wednesday (2) the immediate dissemination of literacy data barred by Inep (National Institute for Educational Studies and Research).
The decision occurs after the growth of political pressure on the Ministry of Education (MEC) and the distress of the federal government due to the alleged omission of results of the main educational assessment of the country, SAEB 2023 (Basic Education Evaluation System).
The theme was treated at a meeting at MEC between Santana and Inep president Manuel Palacios, with the participation of other members of the portfolio. According to reports, palaces resisted the disclosure, justifying disagreements between the Saeb data and those of another evaluation instrument created by the current government, based on state information.
Nevertheless, Camilo demanded that the results be made public, with the proper technical context, explanations of any sample failures and comparisons with other surveys.
Inep has decided to disush the results of the Portuguese and Mathematics tests applied to students of the 2nd year of elementary school. The justification of the municipality is that there would be methodological inconsistencies and differences with the data obtained by the new literate child indicator, released in 2023, which is based on state governments evaluations.
The retreat in transparency generated a strong reaction in Congress, with parliamentarians charging formal explanations, activating the TCU (Federal Court of Audit) and approving an invitation for Minister Camilo Santana to attend the House Education Commission. The government’s silence about the data was interpreted by the opposition as an attempt to hide setbacks in literacy.

Inep is expected to disclose the data later this Thursday (3).
