The mayor of São Paulo, (MDB), said on Wednesday (2) that the governor (Republicans) will run for reelection in 2026. The statement was made during the opening event of the first Municipal Center for the Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), in the north of the state capital.
According to Nunes, confirmation was given directly by Tarcisio on a telephone call. “He called me yesterday to say that. He said he will continue to work in the state government for his reelection, and I will continue to work for the population of the city of Sao Paulo,” said the mayor.
Tarcisio was being quoted as a possible name from the right to the 2026 presidential election, especially in view of the ineligibility of the former president (PL). With the new signage, the governor reinforces his plan to stay ahead of the state for another four years.
Criticism of Lula and political scenario
During the event, Nunes also criticized the management of the president (PT), amid the release of the new Genial/Quaest survey, which pointed to a record disapproval of 56% to the federal government.
The mayor associated the fall in Lula’s popularity with the speeches considered controversial, criticism of the government’s economic action and the increase in interest. “We see some lines, such as saying that the woman is not meant to be a housewife, as if it were something bad. This will disconnect the population of that image of representative of the people,” he said.
Regarding economic driving, Nunes complained about the government’s “spending” and the impacts of the high rate of Selic. “You see Selic over 14% and that means what? No one can finance home or car. It greatly hurts the economy,” he added.

Scenarios for the São Paulo government in 2026
Nunes’ speech also responds to rumors that he himself could dispute the state government in 2026, if Tarcisio chose to run for presidency. Other names listed for the dispute are Gilberto Kassab (PSD), state secretary of Institutional Relations, and André do Prado (PL), president of the Legislative Assembly of São Paulo.
“The moment is to say that I intend to be four years old. Tarcisio told me yesterday that his claim is to run for reelection and that he believes President Bolsonaro will be able to reverse his ineligibility and must be a presidential candidate,” concluded the mayor.
