"It is urgent to change its course," says CGTP Secretary-General

The CGTP Secretary-General says that today’s demonstrations serve to show the country the degradation of workers’ conditions. In Lisbon, Tiago Oliveira asks for new public policies.

CGTP-in Secretary-General Tiago Oliveira told Lusa at the beginning of the national demonstration in Lisbon in defense of “more salary and better pensions” that “it is urgent to change course.”

Hundreds of people started this afternoon at Prince Real Square in Lisbon, a march convened by the General Confederation of Portuguese Workers — Nacional Intersindical (CGTP-in), as part of a national struggle journey, which also had concentrations this morning in Porto and Coimbra.

The demonstration ends at the Cais do Sodré, where Tiago Oliveira will make an intervention.

Under the motto “More Salary and Best Pensions – Defend Public Services and State Social Functions – Social Security, Health, Education, Housing”, at the demonstration in Lisbon converged “the struggles of workers in the districts of Lisbon, Setúbal, Santarém, Portalegre, Beja, Évora and Faro,” according to the Union Center previously announced.

To allow all workers to participate, “several sectors” advanced with strike pre-advice, such as trade, services and hotels, according to Lusa the secretary general of the Union Central.

In the demand book, CGTP requires a salary increase of at least 15%at least 150 euros for all workers, as well as the increase in the current national minimum wage of 870 euros to 1,000 euros.
