End of an era: ketchup packages will be paid at the famous fast food restaurants in Portugal to “fight waste”.
The measure came into force on the day April 1but to the disgust of many, it is not a lie. McDonald’s Portugal began to charge, since the beginning of the month, a 5 cents for each package of ketchup in their restaurants.
The company had been threatening for months – by the way, the charge was already applied almost to the hidden by the delivery platforms.
“Since April 2023 McDonald’s has been available only one ketchup package on each McMenu with potatoes, at the customer’s request,” he explains to McDonald’s, despite the fact that “whenever requested more ketchup packaging, they were supplied without additional customer costs.”

The 5 cents now charged by package is “the recommended amount,” but McDonald’s reinforces “however, that McDonald’s franchises are free entrepreneurs to practice their own prices.”
The ketchup served by McDonald’s in Portugal is produced locally, by Italagro, belonging to the hit group, with facilities in Ribatejo. This national production does not prevent, however, that the product is now targeted.
