Change is passed by law by state deputies; idea is to recognize the contribution of all states of the biome in the production of food
The Legislative Assembly of Amazonas approved on Thursday (3.br.2025) a bill that alters the denomination of Brazil nuts to amazon nuts. The change aims to recognize the contribution of all states that house the biome in food production. The project now awaits the sanction of the governor (Union).
PL (Bill 913/2024) argues that Amazonas, along with other states in the Amazon region, such as Acre, contributes significantly to the national production of nuts. The new nomenclature was proposed by state deputy Sinésio Campos (PT-AM).
The Brazil nut was already called in many ways. It is known as brown to the acrean. It is also called Brazil nuts in many regions of the country.
“Chestnut production is not restricted to Pará, as the name suggests. It is widely cultivated in several Amazonian states, including Amazonas, which has increased its participation in national production. This change recognizes the Amazon as a whole and strengthens the mark of the product in the national and international market”Said Campos.
The law also provides incentives for the traceability of the chestnut, the certification of origin and the use of the new nomenclature in exports and advertising campaigns. The measures seek to ensure the quality and origin of the product, increasing its competitiveness.
The State Secretariat for Economic Development, Science, Technology and Innovation will be responsible for the inspection and granting of quality seals. If sanctioned, the law will enter into force immediately, requiring adaptations for the removal of the Brazil nuts from the state’s productive and commercial sector.
