Syria welcomed a United Nations resolution on Friday (4) to investigate violations and improve the country’s human rights record after the 13-year civil war waged by former President Bashar Al-Assad regime.
The resolution, which asks the new government of Syria to support investigations into crimes was approved without opposition to the Human Rights Council in Geneva on Friday.
This indicates a change in the support of the 47 member countries of the Council regarding the new government of Syria e.
“This international support serves as a strong incentive to continue the path of renovation,” Syria ambassador on the UN in Geneva told Haydar Ali Ahmad to the Council.
The rebels led by the current new president, Ahmed Al-Sharaa, took the capital Damascus in December. Assad fled to Russia after 13 years of civil war that led to the disappearance of more than 100,000 people and torture.
Under pressure to show that it is becoming a new page compared to the old regime, the new government of Syria greeted Friday’s resolution.
“We are proud of Syria’s positive and constructive participation in the elaboration of the resolution for the first time,” said Syria Foreign Minister Asaad Al-Shibani in a statement published in X.
Council members greeted Syria’s engagement and asked the country to comply with the resolution’s commitments, including a serious crimes inquiry committee since the beginning of the war.
