Thousands of people protested on Saturday (5), against the high housing cost and rents in Barcelona, Spain.
Spanish rents have doubled, while houses prices have increased 44% over the past decade, according to idealistic real estate data, surpassing wage growth. Meanwhile, the offer of rented houses has been halved since the 2020 pandemic.
Spain’s center-left government has struggled to find a balance between attracting tourists and migrants to fill employment gaps and keep rents accessible to ordinary citizens in major tourist cities and destinations.
Similar protests occurred in cities throughout Spain, including on the island of Mallorca and Madrid.
