More than 50 countries have proposed negotiations to the US on customs tariffs

Countries that proposed to open negotiations “because they understand that they will support a significant portion of these rates,” said the director of the National Economic Council

More than 50 countries have contacted US administration to request the beginning of negotiations on customs announced by President Trump, today the White House Economic Counselor Kevin Hassett said today.

Countries that proposed to open negotiations “they do it because they understand that they will support a significant portion of these rates,” said the director of the National Economic Council and supports the US President of Economic Policy.

These customs tariffs foresee a universal increase of 10%, which came into force on Saturday, but will be increased from Wednesday to several dozens of US business partners, such as the European Union (20%) and China (34%).

Kevin Hassett was still opposed to the thesis that these new customs rates will mainly penalize the American economy.

“I don’t think we will watch a big impact on consumers in the United States,” insisted the consultant, interviewed by ABC television channel.

Most economists hope these new taxes on imported products to the United States will have an acceleration of inflation and aboard domestic consumption.

“There may be price increases,” admitted Kevin Hassett, for whom these customs tariffs are a way to “treat workers (Americans) tightly” and protect them from unfair competition.

Asked why Russia is not on the list of countries taxed, the economic consultant alleged the ongoing negotiations with Moscow and Kiev about the war in Ukraine.

“I think the president has made the decision not to confuse the two questions. This does not mean that Russia, for as long as possible, will be treated very differently from all other countries,” he said.

US administration explained on Wednesday that countries such as Belarus, Cuba, North Korea and Russia were not included in the list of tariffs because they are subject to US sanctions, which already block the flow of significant trade.
