In honor of the liberation of the Buchenwald concentration camp near the German city of Weimar 80 years ago, a memorial worship will be held on Sunday for the victims of the Nazis. The organizers also expect the participation of 10 survivors, TASR reports according to DPA.
Former German President Christian Wulff is also supposed to perform at the commemoration ceremony with the participation of relatives and descendants of the imprisoned. In the afternoon, the former “Apelplac” concentration camp Buchenwald is scheduled for the act of laying wreaths.
Testimony of Naftali Fürst
One of the speakers at the victims will be the 92-year-old Naftali (Juraj) Fürst. A native of Petržalka, Bratislava, survived Sered and then Auschwitz, where the Nazis moved him to Buchenwald with other prisoners in January 1945. He received a prison number 14021 and 11 April 1945 was liberated. Together with dozens of other skinny bodies, it is also immortalized in one of the most famous photographs that have been preserved from the liberation of concentration camps.
For many years he has been chairman of the International Committee of Buchenwald-Dora and Commands (IKBD). In an interview with ZDF public service television, he wonders whether Germany has actually learned from its history. The success of the AfD in the elections was a shock to him. He is also concerned about incidents at the concentration camp memorial: hateful inscriptions and cartoons that resembled anti -Semitic agitation.
Family tragedies and dispute
His granddaughter Mika, her husband and their two -year -old Pravuk also survived the terrorist attack of Hamas on South Israel on October 7, 2023, where they lived in one of the kibbians.
Shortly before the reverent act, a dispute with the Israeli embassy in Germany, which criticized the invitation of the German-Israeli philosopher Omri Boehm, came to light. His performance was therefore canceled.
