Orchids are one of the most interesting groups of plants in the world, with more than 20,000 different species. Although we usually associate them with tropical forests, some species grow on Czech meadows. Orchids excel in the variety of shapes, colors and smells.

In flower shops and supermarkets, we most often encounter a species of a moth or phalaenopsis, which is popular for its beauty and relatively easy cultivation. Although orchid care is not complicated, it differs from growing conventional houseplants and thus sometimes the owners are surprised. The key to success is the right watering and nutrition.

Orchid needs nutrients and the right pH

The correct element of orchid cultivation is the correct dosing of water. Once you understand how much the orchid is ideal, it will benefit and bloom richly. Another factor is fertilization – it is not necessary, but if you want the plant to bloom for a long time and richly, it is advisable to give it the necessary nutrients. Proper fertilizer promotes the strength and health of orchid.

Fertilizers, whether industrial or natural, contain three basic macronutrients such as nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium. In addition, they also contain micronutrients such as sulfur, calcium, magnesium and iron. Each of these elements has a role in growth. Popular natural fertilizers include banana peels or banana tea, which give orchids and other plants important nutrients.

One of the key factors in orchid cultivation is pH soil. Each plant has its optimal pH according to the environment from where it comes from. For example, plants from the dolomite areas need alkaline soil rich in calcium, while orchids from forest stands prefer a slightly acidic pH. The right pH is important because the plant cannot effectively receive nutrients without it, even if it has a quality substrate.

Phalaenopsis orchids or moths require pH soil in the range of 5.5-6.5, which is a slightly acidic environment. For this reason, emphasis is placed on the use of standing water.

Therefore, orchids can be used by slight acidifying the dressing. Lemon juice or citric acid are a simple and effective way to regulate the pH of the soil. The preparation of the solution is quite easy.

Add about 10 drops of fresh lemon juice to the cup of standing water and rub the leaves of the orchids, including the underside once a week.

Alternatively, more concentrated citric acid can be used. You will need 2 grams that you dissolve in 1 liter of standing water and use this solution to soak the roots to support their growth and improve the ability of the plant to receive nutrients. The solution can also be poured into a sprayer and gently moisten the above -ground part of the plant or substrate.

Thanks to this simple trick, your orchid will bloom even more beautifully, but most of all it will be in better shape.
