“We are ready to use industrial policy to help protect British businesses from the storm,” Starmer wrote in an article published late on Saturday on the Telegraph.

“Some people may feel uncomfortable for … the idea that the state should intervene immediately,” the prime minister admitted. “But we just can’t adhere to old emotions when people are turning so fast,” he said.
Starmer promised to “launch” plans to improve the country’s competitiveness this week.
On Wednesday, the US imposed a basic duty of 10 percent on all imports of the United Kingdom, denying the initial hopes that the country could secure an exception from US President Donald Trump’s tariff campaign.

In his report, Starmer said that “the immediate priority is to maintain our temper and fight for the best possible deal”, adding that all options are still on the table.
The leader of the Conservative Party Kemy Badenoch supported the British government’s policy, telling Sky that failure to impose retaliation “as the first answer is right”.
“The retaliation of duties are simply escalating the trade wars,” Badenoch said.
