Accident occurred on Sunday afternoon (6.abr), on BR-101, in Palhoça, Santa Catarina; at least 5 people were injured
At least 25 vehicles caught fire on Sunday afternoon (6.abr.2025) on BR-101 in Palhoça, Greater Florianópolis, after a ethanol truck fell and exploded. The Military Fire Department reported that 5 people were injured, and the driver of the trailer and his wife suffered serious burns, with 30% and 20% of the body burned respectively.
The accident took place around 1:30 pm in the north direction of the highway. After the explosion, the 2 senses of BR-101 were banned for fire control and area safety. The removal of the affected vehicles was started in the late afternoon, but the Federal Highway Police (PRF) had not yet been forecast for the full release of the track until the publication of this report.
The driver of the trailer and his wife were rescued and taken to the Pinheira UPA (Emergency Care Unit) in Palhoça. Another 3 victims, also with burns, were served by the ambulance of the highway concessionaire. The health condition of the victims was not disclosed.
At the scene, the rescuers also pointed out that there was a LPG gas truck in line behind the listed trailer, but it was possible to relocate it in time to avoid an even greater tragedy. Until 5:30 pm, firefighters still worked in the aftermind of the fires, as well as starting the removal of trees affected by the flames.
The work on site involved 36 firefighters, as well as teams from the Federal Highway Police, Military Police, Civil Defense, Samu and the highway concessionaire, with the support of ambulances and winches. The situation is still monitored by the authorities.
