ATTENTION DRIVERS: Know the bottle trick that can put your car safety at risk

In recent times, online videos and publications have emerged to alert to a supposed trick used by thieves: put an empty plastic bottle next to the tire of a car. Although at first glance it seems just another myth of the internet, there are those who make sure this practice is a sign that someone may be preparing to steal their vehicle.

This method, which circulates mainly on videos shared on social networks, involves the discreet placement of an empty bottle between the tire and the fender, usually on the side of the passenger. The idea is simple: when the driver starts, hears a strange noise coming from the wheel, to the car and goes out to see what’s going on.

While getting out of the car, the danger lurks

It is at this moment of distraction that the thief enjoy. With the car unlocked, the key in the ignition and, in some cases, the sight of the sight, the criminal can quickly get in the car and escape with everything. Although this scenario may seem worthy of a police movie, many people have been alarmed by this possibility.

The main problem is not so much the technique itself, but the fact that it works based on distraction. And the truth is that many drivers have a habit of getting out of the car with the engine on, even for a few seconds. This may be enough for something to run badly.

Urban myth or real threat?

Despite the popularity of the theme, there are no official records in Portugal that confirm theft through this method. Authorities do not point to this type of trick as something recurring, and the reports are mostly anonymous and without concrete confirmation. Still, doubt remains, and for many enough to be more attentive.

Some road safety experts remember that this type of social alarm, even without solid foundation, may have a positive effect by increasing drivers’ attention to their safety habits. It is never too much to remember that one should lock the car whenever it moves away, even for a few seconds.

We recommend:

What if it’s just a coincidence?

It is also important to consider that a bottle next to the tire may have no meaning. It may simply have been left by someone who has passed, rolled there with the wind or was played. Each time you see a bottle can be exaggerated and counterproductive.

However, if you never put the bottle there and find it suspiciously, it is worth staying calm and checking carefully. Look around, make sure you are in a safe place and, if you notice something abnormal, do not hesitate to contact the police.

Put the bottle as a safety measure? Forget it

Apart from the theory of theft, there are also those who argue that putting a bottle on purpose on the tire serves as a prevention measure. Some publications claim that this could ward off thieves or even protect damage tires. But these ideas lack technical or scientific foundation.

In fact, placing a plastic bottle on the tire has no real benefit. It does not protect the deformation tire, it does not prevent excessive heating and does not act as a deterrent alarm. On the contrary, it may eventually cause unnecessary fright or even damage something if it gets stuck in motion.

What can you really do to protect yourself

If you want to protect your car effectively, it is best to bet on proven measures. Always locate the doors, even if you move away for a few seconds. Never leave objects of value in cash. And if possible, parked in busy and well -lit places.

Another important tip, as it refers to, is to get used to quickly check out the outside of the car before entering, especially if the vehicle has been stopped for several hours. Small gestures of attention can make a difference.

More attention, less alarm

There is no evidence that the plastic bottle is a common theft technique, at least in Portugal. But there is something useful throughout this discussion: remember drivers of the importance of maintaining good safety habits. If you find a bottle against your tire, keep calm. Check carefully and, above all, never make it easier. Because, whether a myth or not, prevention remains the best protection.
