During his recent visit to Japan, the president addressed the possibility of opening the Japanese market for Brazilian beef. Japan, which depends on imports to supply about 70% of its beef consumption, suggested the creation of a working group to monitor the sector and send specialists to verify production conditions in Brazil. Negotiations for bovine meat exports to Japan are already extending for more than two decades. In a significant advance, Brazil obtained, in May 2024, the status of foot -and -mouth -free fever free, which facilitates the export of beef to countries that require this certification, such as Japan and South Korea. The cycle of foot -and -mouth vaccination has begun for over 50 years, and currently only a few states have international recognition of the disease without vaccination.
In order for Brazilian companies to export meat, they must meet a series of requirements established by the Ministry of Agriculture. This includes registration with the Federal Inspection Service (SIF) and obtaining the International Zoosanitary Certificate, which proves that the sanitary conditions required by the importing country are being met. Currently, about 3,200 Brazilian establishments are allowed to carry out exports.
