Former goalkeeper Haílton Corrêa de Arruda, better known as Manga, died on the morning of Tuesday (8), at the age of 87.

A native of Recife, the former goalkeeper began his career at Sport, reaching the three-time Pernambuco championship (1955, 1956 and 1958), before migrating to Rio, where he became an idol with Botafogo’s shirt.

After the passage of almost a decade through Alvinegro, in which would still win three editions of the Rio-Sao Paulo Tournament, Manga moved to Nacional, Uruguay. For the neighboring country club, he was a four -time Uruguayan champion (1969, 1970, 1971 and 1972) and won the Libertadores Cup in 1971.

He also had tickets for Grêmio (gaucho champion in 1979), Coritiba (Paraná champion in 1978), Mato Grosso Champion in 1977) and Barcelona de Guayaquil-EQU (Ecuadorian champion in 1981).

With the shirt of the Brazilian team, the goalkeeper served as a starter in the 1966 World Cup.

Recognized as one of the great players of the position in the history of Brazilian football, its birthday – April 26 – was considered the “goalkeeper’s day”.

The clubs that Manga defended throughout their career published honors on social networks.

“Manga was one of the greatest goalkeepers in the history of world football and defended our glorious from 1959 to 1968, having integrated two of the greatest teams in our history, the two -time Rio de Janeiro champions of 61/62 and 67/68,” wrote Botafogo.

“We will make all honors to this giant of our history, which will follow forever alive in our hearts,” said Botafogo President João Paulo de Magalhães Lins.

“His performance in the 1975 Brazilian final, playing with two broken fingers, symbolizes the courage and delivery that made him one of the greatest goalkeepers in our history,” said Internacional.

The final of that year, played in Beira-Rio between Internacional and Cruzeiro, was marked by a great defense of the goalkeeper in the free kick of the defender Nelinho.

Inter’s team was led by coach Rubens Minelli and had names like Falcão and Paulo César Carpeggiani. Won the decision 1-0 with goal from the Chilean defender Figueroa.

“The National Club of Football deeply regrets the death of Haílton Corrêa de Arruda” Manga “, champion of Conmebol Libertadores 1971, 1971 Copa 1971 and four Uruguayan championships. To his family, friends and loved ones, the strongest hug. Goodbye, mango,” published Nacional.
