Brazil remains in a state of maximum alert in relation to avian flu. The Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock announced the extension of the State of Emergency Zoosanitary for another 180 days throughout the national territory. This decision, published in the Federal Official Gazette, aims to prevent preventively the structure of combating H5N1 virus, responsible for high pathogenicity aviary influenza. To this extent, the Ministry ensures the rapid response capacity to new outbreaks of the disease, as well as facilitating the release of resources and cooperation between federal, state and municipal governments. By the end of March, the government had already implemented an important measure: the suspension of fairs, tournaments and exhibitions that promote bird cluster.
This prohibition can only be relaxed by strict technical assessment and the approval of a biosafety plan. Since May 2023, Brazil has registered 166 outputs of avian flu, mostly in wild birds. Only three cases have been identified in subsistence creations, but the virus has not yet reached commercial farms, which maintains Brazil with the status of a country free from the disease, according to the World Animal Health Organization. Although there is no immediate risk to large -scale production, surveillance remains intense. Prevention is considered the best way when it comes to animal health and food safety.
