Died on Tuesday (8), mango, former goalkeeper and idol of Botafogo, at the age of 88. He fought prostate cancer and was hospitalized in Rio de Janeiro. The legend of Brazilian football inspired the creation of goalkeeper in Brazil.
In the country, date is celebrated on April 26 in honor of the former player’s birthday, one of the main names of the position in the history of national sport.
According to information from the Football Museum, the celebration was established in 1975, at the initiative of two former professors of the Rio de Janeiro Army School of Physical Education, Officers Raul Carlesso and Reginaldo Pontes Bielinski.
Carlesso was one of the pioneers in specialized work for position in Brazil, and was the first goalkeeper preparer to be part of the Brazilian National Team coaching in a World Cup (1974).
After the success of the initiative, he created, in 1975, the goalkeeper’s Day, celebrated on April 14 of that year. However, in 1976, Carlesso wanted to honor, who at the time was Brazilian champion for the International, and changed the date on the 26th of the same month, the anniversary of the Botafogo idol.
He defended Botafogo from 1959 to 1968, and was four times in Rio (1961, 1962, 1967 and 1968). He was also a starter of the Brazilian team at the 1966 World Cup.
The former goalkeeper began his career at Sport and had major tickets at Nacional, Uruguay, Barcelona de Guayaquil, Internacional and Grêmio.
