The Italian Antimonopoly Office imposed a fine of EUR 20 million for illegal practices in the sale of tickets to the Coliseum.

The Italian AGCM AGCM AGCM announced on Tuesday that it had a fine of nearly EUR 20 million for unlawful practices in selling tickets to the Roman Coliseum to an official seller and six travel agencies. As a result of their proceedings, long -term overpriced tickets were overpriced in this sought -after archaeological site. Basically, the basic tickets could not be received, TASR writes according to Ansa and AFP.

The highest fine (seven million euros) will be paid by Coopculture, which managed the official sale of tickets to the Colossea between 1997 and 2024. According to the AGCM statement, it consciously contributed to the considerable and long -term unavailability of tickets in the basic value.

Abuse of tickets

According to AGCM, it did not adequately opposed the “automated blocking of tickets” and tied a significant part of the tickets to the sale of its own educational tours, thus enriching it.

Tourists could not directly get to the Colosseum tickets and were forced to turn to travel agencies or other platforms. These tickets were associated with other services, such as a guide, picking up at a certain place, or preferential entry into the Coliseum, which made them more expensive.

Fines for travel agencies

Other fines were received by six travel agencies from Italy, Germany, the Netherlands and Ireland, which, using shoes (automated buying tools) from Coopculture, obtained a large number of tickets that they then sold on their platforms. The tickets were officially unavailable.

Colosseum is the most visited monument of Italy. According to data from the Ministry of Culture, more than 12.3 million people visited it in 2023.
