At least 27 people died, including a province governor, and 134 were injured at dawn on Tuesday (8) after the ceiling of a nightclub in Santo Domingo, Dominican officials said.
Rescue teams were working to remove people who are still believed to be trapped under the rubble, said Juan Manuel Mendez, head of the Dominican Republic Emergency Operations Center.
Mendez did not report the number of people who would be inside the Jet Set nightclub near the coast of the Dominican capital at the time of the incident.
President Luis Abinader said that among the dead is Nelsy Cruz, governor of the province of Monte Cristi in the north.
“We deeply regret the tragedy,” he wrote at X, adding that the authorities were working tirelessly to rescue the victims. “Our prayers are with families affected.”
