International information has priority of CNN Portugal. For over three years we have written daily about Ukraine. We now do it now about the global political, economic and strategic transformations that are rapidly transforming the world
In the internal debate about this project, we have suggested calling it “the end of the world to the minute.” For the ironic contradiction of observing in real time a kind of assisted death of the world as we know it. Or we knew. Because about a reality augmented and accelerated by so many transformations – technological, social, communicational, climate… – a disruption of global consequences in the blocks of power is now related. Donald Trump’s US presidency is unleashing new orders and disorders worldwide: in the US, EU, Western alliances, dialogue and confrontation with the East, tension with the Middle East, in relation to the global south.
We ended up calling him, incorporating the ironic meaning of Aldous Huxley’s dystopian work, but especially the challenge of Shakespeare’s original expression in “The Storm”: when Miranda – who until this moment knows only two men, one representing the good and the other – see the first time these newborn reaches the island from where it never left – and that represents a symbolic space – she exclaims marvel “Oh admirable new world that have people like that!” “And we know their moral failures that she still does not know.”
In 2025, Donald Trump is and represents the most vigorous and histrionic alterity, in a world already in fast technological evolutions, new imbalances, old wounds and new runs: the invasion of Ukraine and the Putin’s power project, the Full EU dependencies, the threat to native cohesion, the conflict between Israel and Hamas, the nuclear threat of IR will. The growth of populism, the erosion of the references of truth, the threats to democracies, the emergence of China were already phenomena of great transformation. But Trump wages new wars and unlocks old traditional devices.
This is why, symbolically, we open this by the minute on the day the European Union and the rest of the world are applied to the so-called “reciprocal tariffs”, which substantiate the trade war. This is one of the faces of the immediate action of the new US President. It breaks paradigms and alliances, detached from brakes and counterweights, challenges rules powers, launches trade wars, cultural, political, it creates a system of hope and fears.
It is this ongoing transformation that we will report every day. In the minute. After all, quoting Manuel António Pina, “it’s not the end or the principle of the world yet. Calm down is just a little late.” Welcome to this editorial project. This is the admirable Trump world.
