The Union sent on Tuesday (8) to the ministers (indigenous peoples) and (justice and public security) recommendation so that, in Mato Grosso, near the border with Bolivia.
The document was also sent to the Director General of,, President of the (National Foundation of Indigenous Peoples), and the President of ,. All have 15 business days to answer.
In the recommendation, DPU points out that the Sararé Indigenous Land currently occupies the first place in the ranking of illegal alerts among all indigenous lands of Brazil.
The Defender’s Operations recalls the operations for the repression of the advancement of illegal mining in the territory, with the destruction of machinery and camps, seizure of weapons and detention of involved, but points out that actions often have violent and armed reaction by criminals, with risk to the integrity of agents and indigenous people.
“It turns out that such operations have produced only temporary results, since, after completion, the mining returns to its activities,” says the agency.
“The scenario of the need for constant repetition of these punctual operations is created, which thus prove insufficient and make demand costly,” says the recommendation. “Therefore, it is necessary to structure a more complex, solid and effective action plan for the region, with integrated structures and actions in the long run.”
DPU also calls for urgent measures to protect the Katitãuhlu indigenous people and the territory, as well as actions to definitively end the illegal extraction circuit of mining, deforestation and invasion of the territory, among other actions.
The Sararé Indigenous Land has about 200 Nambikwara Katitãuuhlu Indians, and is among the municipalities of Conquest D’Oeste, Nova Lacerda and Vila Bela da Holy Trindade. The indigenous people argue that mining has prevented the maintenance of the traditional lifestyle in the community and interferes with everyday activities.
