The collapse of the roof in the Jet Set in the Dominican Republic required 79 victims and 160 injured, rescuers are still fighting debris.
The number of victims after the roof collapsed in the nightclub Jet Set in the capital of the Dominican Republic at night climbed to 79 people, while another 160 was injured. TASR writes according to AP.
More than 12 hours after the roof collapsed, the rescuers still pulled out the survivors from the ruins. Firefighters removed broken concrete blocks on the spot and saw wooden boards to use them as levers to lift heavy debris.
“We assume that many are still alive, and therefore the local authorities will not give up until we free the last person from under the ruins,” said Juan Manuel Méndez, director of the emergency operations Center. “We continue to remove debris and search for people,” he said at night. “We’ll be tirelessly looking for them,” he added.
According to AP, it is still not clear what caused the roof to collapse or when the club building was last controlled. Prosecutor Rosalba Ramos told CDN for the TV station that although everyone wants to know what happened, the authorities are still focusing on the search for survivors.
Jet Set issued a statement in which it made it clear that she was working with the authorities. “The loss of human lives leaves us in a state of immense pain and dismay,” she said.
Among the 58 victims are the governor of the northwest province of Montecristi Nelsy Cruz and the baseball player working in the American league MLB Octavio Dotel. The deputy of the Dominican Parliament Bray Vargas and the singer of Merengue Rubby Pérez, who performed in the club, was also injured on the spot.
