The Attorney’s Office also claims individual payment of R $ 50,000 to 22 indigenous people, including elders still alive and descendants of victims, totaling another R $ 4.4 million in financial compensation.

“I was born in Vanuíre, but I have grandparents, parents, uncles and cousins who lived this tragedy. Many could not go back there, because of the trauma and the sadness that all this represents,” he told the Sheet.
Living to this day out of their ancestral territory, the village vaniure krenak decided moral and social. Lidiane Damaceno is among the 22 indigenous people who ask for individual compensation.
“Nothing can erase or repair everything our people have lived, but it can serve as a minimal gesture to help our families to move on,” he said.
In 2021, the court had already recognized an action filed by the MPF in Minas Gerais since 2015 and ordered the liability of the Union, the State of Minas Gerais, Funai and the former captain of the Military Police of Minas Gerais Manoel dos Santos Pinheiro for violations of the rights of indigenous peoples, especially the Krenak, during the military dictatorship.
Captain Pinheiro was responsible for implementing the paramilitary force composed of indigenous people. He was denounced by the MPF in 2017 for genocide crime against the Krenak people. He died in 2023, before being tried.
This initial process filed by the MPF did not include financial values. It was a public recognition and apology, as well as the determination for Funai to finalize the process of identification and delimitation of the Krenak Indigenous Land of Seven Halls (MG).
