Most survey participants are favorable to change the 6 × 1 work scale, with 44 hours per week, for a 4 × 3 scale, with 36 hours per week
A recent survey by Nexus Research and Data Intelligence revealed that 65% of Brazilians support the reduction of working hours. The survey, which interviewed more than 2,000 workers in all states, including the Federal District, stressed that most participants are in favor of changing the 6 × 1 work scale, with 44 hours per week, to a 4 × 3 scale, with 36 hours per week. Only 27% of respondents opposed the measure, while 5% were neutral and 3% could not answer. Respondents pointed out that the reduction of working hours could improve quality of life, increase productivity and promote social development. In addition, they believe the change would bring benefits to industries and companies.
The proposal of amendment to the Constitution aimed at implementing this change is currently under analysis in the House of Representatives. When specifically questioned this proposal, 63% of respondents were favorable, while 30% opposed, 4% remained neutral and 3% could not answer. Despite significant support among workers, analysts warn of the possible economic impacts that the reduction of working hours could cause in Brazil. They argue that decreasing hours worked can result in additional costs for companies, which would have to hire more employees to maintain the same productivity.
