Their progress continues in the east, as the invaders now threaten to occupy the last enclave of the region that remains under its control.
The Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation has announced that its forces occupied the settlement of Katerinivka in the neighboring Donetsk District. The control of Katerinivka and the nearby village of Novomichailivka will allow the Russian forces to attack the remaining Ukrainian troops in the Luhansk region.
In September 2022, it illegally annexed four Ukrainian regions – Donetsk, Luhank, Hersona and Zaporizia – although the Russian forces did not control all these territories.
Ukrainian military bloggers reported the advance of Russian troops around Katerinivka, but have not so far confirmed the occupation of the particular settlement.
Earlier today, Ukraine’s National Defense General Staff confirmed that battles were raging in the area, focusing on the outskirts of Pokrovsk’s strategic importance.
