Want to keep your dishes flawless? Never wash these objects on the machine

The dishwasher is, for many, one of the best inventions of the modern home. Save time, effort and let everything shine. But beware: not everything should go there. There are objects that can become damaged, lose their effectiveness or even represent a risk to your health.

Even though it is very practical, the dishwasher is not a universal solution. There are utensils and materials that can’t stand the heat, water pressure or the strong detergents used in these devices. Washing some items at hand is sometimes the only way to ensure that they last longer and maintain their quality.

Below, we explain which eight items should avoid putting on the machine, and why. The explanations were based on advice from specialists in cleaning and maintaining household items.

Cast iron, steel and copper: the enemies of rust

Cast iron pots and skillets are extremely durable, but only if they are well cared for. The machine removes the natural protective layer that forms with the use and can make it rust.

The same is true of steel, carbon or copper utensils. In addition to being able to gain spots, lose their shine and look aged. In the case of copper, contact with aggressive detergents accelerates oxidation.

Plastics: Guaranteed deformations

According to, not all plastics are suitable for high temperatures. Even if they indicate to be safe for the machine, many end up deforming over time, especially if they are placed in the lower compartment, closer to the resistance.

In addition, plastic particles can be released and contaminate other utensils or even the foods that are later placed on them. Therefore, it is appropriate to wash the plastics by hand, with warm water and smooth detergent.

We recommend:

Wood and thermal: the end of effectiveness

Wood utensils, such as spoons, tablets or knife cables, do not resist well for moisture and prolonged heat. Over time, the crack, gable or even rot.

Already the thermal glasses and bottles with vacuum isolation lose this function if they are washed on the machine. Sealing may be compromised, which nullifies its usefulness. It is appropriate to use its own brush and wash carefully.

Fine dishes and cutting objects: a risk that does not pay

Kitchen knives, especially good quality, lose the wire with machine washing. Vibration and contact with other utensils wear out the blade faster than you think.

Ancient porcelain, dishes with gold or decorative dishes are also too fragile to support automatic washing. The same applies to fine crystals and glass, which can crack, scratch or go easily.

In addition, silver can darken and lose the natural shine when exposed to the detergents of the machine. Regular manual polishing and careful washing are the safest options.

Avoid common errors

Avoiding these common errors can significantly increase the durability of your dishes and kitchen utensils. As tempting as it is to carry everything on the machine, it is worth losing a few minutes to wash certain items by hand. Your wallet and your kitchen thank you.

Finally, remember: more than cleaning, the important thing is to take good care of your objects. And in this case, this starts knowing what you should never enter the dishwasher.
