After the deputy Pedro Lucas Fernandes (União Brasil-MA) emerged as the main name quoted to take office. The substitution maintains the folder under the control of União Brasil, a party that currently also runs the Ministries of Tourism and Regional Integration and Development.
Pedro Lucas’s choice was discussed at a lunch between the Minister of Institutional Relations, Gleisi Hoffmann, and legend leaders, including party president Antonio Rueda, Tourism Minister Celso Sabino, and Senate President Davi Alcolumbre (Union-AP). Juscelino, participated in the meeting and decided to present his dismissal letter to avoid embarrassment to President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva (PT).
Pedro Lucas, 45, has been the leader of União Brasil in the House since February and fulfills his second term as a federal deputy for Maranhão, same state of Juscelino. He has a degree in Administration, with specialization in government planning. He was councilor of São Luís for two terms, from 2013 to 2019, and chaired the Metropolitan Executive Agency (Age) of Maranhão, appointed by the then governor Flávio Dino, today Minister of the STF.
Despite the leadership position, it has a discreet profile in Congress. Since the beginning of 2023, he gave only nine speeches in the podium. In 2022, he was the second most voted deputy in Maranhão, with 159,786 votes. Before becoming leader of the bench, he was deputy leader of the Lula administration in the National Congress for two years.
Recently, he joined the presidential entourage traveling to Asia, alongside ministers and the president of the Senate, on a mission to attract investments to Brazil.
União Brasil follows in the government
With the departure of Juscelino, União Brasil quickly mobilized to maintain the ministry. The caption already occupies strategic positions in the government, and Pedro Lucas’s nomination is seen as a way of preserving balance on the terrace. The appointment should reinforce the presence of the party, even amid internal differences between ruling and oppositionist wings.

Pedro Lucas’s choice is also seen as a sign of political stability, indicating an ally of moderate technical and political profile – with traffic on both the Planalto and among the main leaders of the House.
