The acting president and Minister of Development, Industry, Commerce and Services, Geraldo Alckmin, said on Wednesday (9) that the Brazilian government will seek to negotiate with the United States the reduction of the import tariff imposed on Brazilian products. The measure occurs after the US government’s decision to include Brazil in the new round of minimum 10% rates on imports.

“We understand that there should be no fare, because the United States have surplus in the trade balance with Brazil,” said Alckmin during a ceremony in Mato Grosso do Sul.

According to the minister, of the top ten products imported from the US throughout Brazil, eight enter the country with zero fare. The average rate applied by Brazil over American products is 2.7%, which, according to Alckmin, shows imbalance in trade relations.

“The path is dialogue and negotiation. We will work to reduce this rate, which is not good for Brazil or for the world,” he said.

The statement was made during the launch of the elementary stone of the new Chilean Arauco Cellulose Factory, in the municipality of Innocence (MS). The project, approximately R $ 15 billion, is considered one of the largest industrial investments ongoing in Brazil.
