The stoppage should start at midnight on Thursday (local time); Workers criticize Javier Milei government measures

Argentina prepares for another general strike against President Javier Milei’s fiscal adjustment policies (La Libertad Avanza, right). The mobilization, led by the main union centrals of the country, began this Friday (9.abr.2025) with acts in front of the National Congress. The 24-hour stoppage should start at midnight on Thursday (local time).

The main guidelines of the protesters concern the salary and rights of retirees, the defense of national industry, the resumption of public works, a national employment plan and the end of the repression of social demonstrations by the federal government. Workers claim that they are having freedoms and rights disrespected, they accuse the government of favoring inequality and social injustice, and criticize the fact that, according to them, there is no dialogue or attempt on the part of Milei.

They organize the general strike the CGT (General Work Confederation), CTA-A (Argentina Autonomous Workers Center) and CTA-T (Argentine Workers and Workers Center). This will be the 3rd stoppage together by the 3 union centrals.

On the morning of this 4th (9.abr), the union entities participated in a press conference in Buenos Aires.

“We will massively follow this mobilization as a prelude to tomorrow’s general strike, where we will express the will and decision of the working class to brake to this government policy that leads to the wealth generated by the workers, with blows led by President Milei himself, and today has a new chapter in the hands of the IMF, just as he had done [Mauricio] Macri [ex-presidente da Argentina]said the secretary general of autonomous CTA, Hugo “dog” Godoy.

On social networks, Milei shared a statement by the minister of state deregulation and transformation, Federico Adolfo Sturzenegger, about the strike. “A strike is an attempt at extortion. It does not affect us at all. We will continue with our goals.”says the passage published by the Argentine President.

According to the IMF

The IMF (International Monetary Fund) has reported that it has reached an agreement with the Argentine authorities for a new $ 20 billion loan through the EFF (Extended Financing Mechanism). The disbursement, however, depends on the approval of the IMF executive board, which should meet in the coming days.

“The agreement is based on the impressive initial progress of the authorities in the economy stabilization, supported by a strong tax anchor, which is providing rapid misinflation and recovery of the activity and social indicators. The program supports the next phase of Argentina’s National Stabilization and Reforms Agenda, which aims to consolidate macroeconomic stability, strengthen external sustainability and unlock strong and more sustainable growth, at the same time as it manages the most challenging global scenario ”says IMF note.
