Emmanuel Macron works for France to recognize the Palestinian state in June

The president of France, Emmanuel Macron, said Wednesday that he studies the possibility of recognizing the Palestinian State in the framework of an International Palestinian Conference that will be expected in June in New York. “The objective is to preside over this conference with Saudi Arabia in June, where this reciprocal recognition process could be finalized,” he revealed on his trip to Egypt.

“We have to move towards recognition and in the coming months we will do it,” Macron said in an interview with El Channel France 5 where he has pointed out that this decision would not be made “per unit or to please this or that person” but because he believes that “it is the right thing” and because he seeks to “join a collective dynamic, that is, that also allows those who defend Palestine in turn recognizing Israel.”

The Chief of the French State has been saying for months that he intends to give an official recognition of the Palestinian State, but only “at the useful moment” in which he can trigger “reciprocal movements of recognition.” It was in December when he closed with the heir prince of Saudi Arabia, Mohamed Bin Salman, the organization of the “Conference for the two states”, which is the solution that advocate France and many other countries, but to which both Israel and the Iranian regime oppose.

Subsequently, Israel Foreign Minister Gideon Saar reacted to the PARIS position, accusing Macron that “the unilateral recognition of a fictional Palestinian state, by any country, in the reality that we all know, will be a prize for terrorism and an impulse” for the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas). “These types of actions will not bring peace, security, or stability to our region. On the contrary: they will only move them away,” said the head of Israeli diplomacy in a message that, not to mention France, has published in its profile of social network X.

Most countries that recognize Palestine are found in Africa, Asia and South America. At the end of May 2024, Spain, Norway and Ireland recognized the state of Palestine, defending that “it is the right thing” in the framework of the conflict in the Middle East and seeks a paradigm shift to achieve peace and advance in the solution of two states. Since then, 146 of the 193 United Nations Member States (more than 75 percent) have recognized Palestine.

However, that recognition has not earned Palestine to become a member of the United Nations Law, since it needs the approval of the UN Security Council. The last attempt to achieve support occurred on April 18, 2024, but was frustrated after the United States veto. A total of twelve countries voted in favor-among them Russia and China-while the United Kingdom, another permanent member, abstained, as well as Switzerland.
